DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ALERT
SPRING is in the air—at least for our timepieces. Remember to spring forward one hour at 2:00AM on March 9th!
(Did you know that Benjamin Franklin is credited with first proposing the idea of Daylight Saving Time in 1784? He hoped to save on candles.)

Heads up on a scam from a concerned PPI member…
A company who called themselves “Living Bread Ministries” out of Pennsylvania called last week wanting printing done. They sent a PDF to print from (2 pages for a total print quantity of 120,000). Terms were for us to be paid in advance for the printing and freight to PA. They gave us two different credit cards to bill. We got approval on the credit cards, and the job was printed. Then wanted us to use a freight company we have never used before, so we told them they would need to arrange the freight. They called back asking us to wire them the money to Africa for the freight cost so they could pay for it. Obviously red flags went up and we did not wire the money.
Beware of odd orders!

New Tax Stimulus Package Bonus Depreciation

PPI Members could benefit from provisions in new economic stimulus legislation. Here's what you need to know:

1. Companies that purchase less than $800,000 of capital assets in a year now can expense the first $250,000 (up from $128,000) of capital investment in 2008.

2. A temporary change to the tax code will allow businesses that buy new equipment in 2008 to deduct an additional 50% of the cost of the investment. According to the White House, this will encourage you to expand and create
new jobs now, because buying equipment, software, and tangible property
this year will dramatically lower your taxes. In order to qualify for the bonus depreciation, three requirements must be met:

i.    The property must be one of the following: 1) property to which the general rules of the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery period of 20 years or less; 2) water utility property; 3) some computer software; or 4) be a qualified leasehold improvement property.

ii.   The original use of the property must commence with the taxpayer after December 31, 2007.

iii.   The property must be purchased after December 31, 2007 but before January 1, 2009.

The bonus depreciation incentive is available to all companies, regardless of
the size of the investment.

The Premier Print Awards
Call for Entries

PIA/GATF proudly invites you to participate in the 2008 Premier Print Awards. In the six decades since the founding of the Premier Print Awards, many things have changed in the printing industry. One thing has remained a constant: the value of winning a Premier Print Award.

Companies both large and small have used their award in a number of ways. Some use their showing in each year’s competition as a benchmark of their company’s quality and craftsmanship. Others use the award as a way to make their mark in a highly competitive marketplace. One thing they all agree on is that entering the Premier Print Awards is a great step in growing business!

Want to enter? Entering the Premier Print Awards is an easy process. Watch your mail for the Premier Print Awards Call for Entries brochure. The brochure will give you all the background on the award, the judging process, the award categories, and how to submit your entry.

Can’t wait for the brochure? Download a copy by clicking HERE. You can also get the complete details from the PIA/GATF website.

Don’t wait--gather the print work you have produced since May 1, 2007 through the present (April 30, 2008) and enter before the May 19, 2008 deadline. Show everyone the terrific work your company produces and be recognized with the prestigious Premier Print Award! Download Entry Form - Click here>>

Postal Service Announces USPS Increase
Yes, we are anticipating another postal increase…
The Postal Service has announced new rates effective May 12, 2008.  This is the first rate increase that falls under the new regulations established by the PIA-championed postal reform legislation, which means that the new prices can increase on average no more than the rate of inflation.

"We knew future increases were inevitable, but are confident the new rate-setting process will achieve our policy goals: more predictability and affordability when rates are increased. There is also increased transparency in the rate hike process, as outlined in the bill signed in December 2006," Michael Maken, President & CEO PIA/GATF.
Specifics released by the USPS last week include prices for first class stamps to rise by one cent, and a lower additional-ounce price for presorted first-class mail letters and a lower pound price for standard mail saturation and high-density flats. Keep your eye on future editions of Th’INK Tank for details.

Twenty years ago, a group of women in the graphic arts and allied industries started WIGA: Women in Graphic Arts. The group has not been active in recent years, but let's celebrate the twenty-year anniversary anyway! Come to Elysian Fields Brewery just west of Qwest Field and join the hardy women who have survived those twenty years and more in the graphic design and print industry.

If you have women friends in the industry - print buyers, print salespeople, shop owners, vendor sales reps - let them know. And if you feel this snowballing, please let Pat Detmer know so that she can get all nervous and lose sleep and score as many tables as possible at the brewery that afternoon. There's an entry on Occidental, and one on 1st Avenue. We'll gather on the 1st Avenue side of the brewery on Thursday, March 13th, around 5 p.m., 3:30 if you're in sales ...
