Inflation pressures are increasing for the economy and printers are feeling the pinch. Over
the course of 2007 the cost items that increased the most were employee health insurance
(8.5 percent) and energy/utilities (7.3 percent). However, in terms of ultimate impact,
milder increases in wages and salaries and paper hurt more since these items make up a
larger share of the typical printers’ total costs.

April is Injury Prevention Month
Injury prevention can be as easy as 1-2-3.
Here's a simple three-pronged training strategy to help you eliminate workplace injuries:
1. Train employees to recognize and understand workplace hazards.
Analyze jobs and inspect work areas to identify all possible hazards. Then teach your workers to keep alert for these hazards while they work. |
|

Injury Prevention Can Be as Easy as 1-2-3 |
2. Focus on reporting and correcting workplace hazards.
You can't correct hazards you don't know about. So make sure all employees in your organization understand that it is their responsibility to report hazards they spot anywhere in the facility-not just in their own work areas. Once a hazard is reported, appropriate personnel must be mobilized to check out the problem and take whatever corrective action is necessary. Reporting and correcting workplace hazards also involves accident and near-miss reporting and investigation.
3. Review PPE and safe work practice requirements.
Sure you've been over and over the safety rules and talked yourself hoarse about wearing assigned PPE. But do it again, anyway, this month. PPE and safe work practices are two keys to any successful injury prevention program.
Are You Saving As Much Energy As You Should Be?
Taking appropriate energy-saving measures at the workplace isn't just the environmentally responsible thing to do—it also saves your organization money in the long run. Covering everything from light choice and brightness to switches and sunlight reflection, this free checklist will help you discover new ways to save energy at the workplace. Find out if your company is doing all it should be to save on both energy and costs.

What To Do When An Employees Dies
The PIA/GATF Checklist
The graphic arts industry is one of the safest in manufacturing. Still, employees can die from natural causes or accidents on or off the job. Any company that experiences the death of an employee wants to respond professionally and compassionately. However, things can slip by during such emotionally charged events. PIA/GATF has a readiness evaluation and checklist that will help your company do the following:
|
| |
- Assist the family with speedy benefit claims and payroll issues
- Help employees cope with the loss of a co-worker
- Properly handle the incident, if it is work-related
- Deal with company and customer security concerns
- While this checklist may not contain items covering all types of incidents in all types of situations, it does give the employer a head start toward developing a company-specific document.
